Most investors are able to pay independent research providers directly from research budgets or even from marketing budgets, if the research is to be open source.  Some, however, allocate commission payments to their preferred research providers through a CSA (Commission Sharing Agreement) with their existing brokers or an independent execution only provider. By separating (unbundling) payments for research and execution in this manner, the fiduciary obligations of the fund managers to their beneficiaries are being met.
